World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame
By Adonal Foyle
On September 23, 2009, I will be enshrined in the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame. The NBA has some members of the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame (including David Robinson, Vlade Divac, Tiny Archibald and Dikembe Mutombo. So to be in this class is an absolute honor.
My mom will give a speech before introducing me, so I am very excited about that.
The World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame honors the body of work that professional athletes do outside of their comfort sports zone. This means a lot to me because it's always humbling when you are recognized by your peers for the work you do. But to be recognized by all sports is really great. I'm also very humbled by the honor because I just go out and I try to do what I think is right. We all want to do something to help change the world. And I try to give back every way I can. To be recognized and appreciated for it is amazing.
When I was a child growing up in the Caribbean, I knew what it was like to not have a lot. We hardly had anything to eat and I saw how my grandmother found ways to stretch out a piece of fish or some bread so it lasts longer. I was always amazed at how she would find a way to make food last. That's when I knew how important it was to give back a little bit.
I've always said that when you're in the public eye, it's important to try to find a way to make the world a better place. And I've always felt that all professional athletes should give back to their local community. They know the struggles of their community and the kids out there don't need a whole lot. So sometimes it just takes something little to tranform a child. And, in a lot of ways, it's our responsibility as professional athletes to help change our community.
