Grenadines FlagAdonal's Community Outreach in the Caribbean

Despite tourists' own personal opinions of the Caribbean, Adonal Foyle's childhood memories were anything but paradise. Growing up with his grandmother and donkey in the small island of Canouan, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Foyle found himself fortunate to to have the opportunities of getting a quality education and playing the sport he enjoys most.

Since establishing himself as an intimidating shot-blocker in the NBA, Foyle has never forgotten where he came from and does everything he can to improve the lives of the islands' youth – whether it is on or off the basketball court.

"My goal is to find a way to motivate growth," Adonal said. "I always want to keep in touch with my people and make myself available to them."

From holding basketball camps to donating money, Foyle continues to make every effort he can to make himself accessible to those back in his homeland. In the end, he hopes to see more young people just as fortunate as he in getting the same level of education.

"My dream is to for all of them to attend college and get a good education," Adonal said. "That's what I want. If they can do that, they will be set for life. And it will be a worthwhile endeavor."

Adonal added that it is just as important for his community to see him back home on the islands as it is for him to give back to them.

"I find it very important." Adonal said. "Being back in the community and showing your face is of tremendous significance to people. They get to see you and what you amount to. And if you give back in even a small way, it's something big to them. Just going back to say Hello, I'm back and I'm here because I care,' that presence alone is very important."

"For me, going back home - the place where I grew up and was taught to be a man - and saying I appreciate that and what you have done, here's a token of my appreciation', I think that is wonderful and very powerful."
