Southeast Division Outlook
The 2007-08 NBA season is now underway, and Adonal and the Orlando Magic are ready to capitalize on their success last season, which led to a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
This year, the Magic have reloaded and can be a legitimate contender for the Southeast Division title.
Along with Adonal, free-agent acquisition Rashard Lewis was brought in to help add size as well as perimeter shooting to the offense. New coach Stan Van Gundy may also be a blessing in disguise after Biliy Donovan decided to back out of his deal to be the new Magic coach.
Orlando can make a serious run at a higher seed in the playoffs this season - but there are other teams in the division that can make it difficult for the Magic this year.
Here they are (in no particular order):
WASHINGTON WIZARDS: The Wizards were one of the hottest teams in the league toward the end of the season. Then, they lost star guard Gilbert Arenas to injury and were bounced out of the playoffs in the first round. The Wizards didn't make too many changes this offseason, but it should have enough to make another run at the postseason. Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler provide a nice core and should have enough to continue playing in late April. They just need to improve on their defense.
MIAMI HEAT: Gone are many of the players who were on that NBA Finals championship team two seasons ago. But Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal are still there and continue to be the necessary pieces for another big run. Miami recently added scoring guard Ricky Davis to help take some of the load off Shaq and Wade. And Penny Hardaway was able to crack the opening night roster and reunite with his former Magic teammate. How will this all translate? It's hard to say. It all depends on if Shaq can stay healthy and be able top play at least 65 games. But if Wade goes down, so can the Heat's season.
CHARLOTTE BOBCATS: The Bobcats have the go-to scorer they've been looking for. Ironically, it turns out to be Adonal's former teammate - Jason Richardson. Richardson will provide scoring and rebounding and will compliment Gerald Wallace, Matt Carroll and Raymond Felton. Emeka Okafor will continue to command the paint inside. The Bobcats also hired a new coach (Sam Vincent) and want to show they are serious about making the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. With Sean May and Adam Morrison out for the season, Charlotte's depth is in question.
ATLANTA HAWKS: The Hawks had a remarkable preseason and are considered a possible sleeper this season. They are loaded with young talent and has shown signs that a future can be bright for them. The problem is they lack veteran talent, meaning young stars such as Josh Smith and Marvin Williams will have to grow up fast. Guard Joe Johnson will continue to lead the team in scoring. If they Hawks can jump to a fast start, they could be the new darlings of the NBA.
