End of 2003-04 Season
I've just completed my seventh NBA season and I have to say that in spite of wins, losses and numbers, the one thing I learned most importantly about this season is about myself and how I've been able to come across anything in my path. But before I get to that, I want to give a lot of credit to this year's team.
I thought over the last four weeks of the season, we've played some of the best basketball we've played all year. And I thought that was a testament to the more players went down, the more we courageously stood. We've truly been Warriors' over the past several weeks in every sense of the word. We've had guys like Clifford Robinson who just stepped up to the plate and has been there from the beginning of the year just playing his heart out. And that has to say something. The guys just left their hearts onto the floor.
Had this team been healthy the entire year, the possibilities would have been endless. It's just so frustrating. Because if this team had been healthy, we're a playoff team, no doubt about it. And that's one of those Could have, would have should have' mentalities. But I don't want to do that. Because as it was, I thought this team played really, really hard. We lost several games by one point. And if you take all those games, covert them into wins and we're a playoff team.
Ever since I broke into the starting lineup, it's really been fun. I think it showed that with minutes on the floor, I've really been able to step my game up and continue to get better. Not too long ago, I gave arguably one of my best games against Minnesota (20 points, 16 rebounds). And I let the quality of my game, regardless of the numbers, speak for itself. And it's been really great. So, I've really been happy with my level of play. That was probably the best basketball of my career. In case anyone is curious, the knee is fine. This summer, I plan on working out with everyone, put more strength on it and do what is necessary. In light of what I had gone through this year, and being able to come back and play, that's been great.
I haven't had much time on the floor to have any memories stand out this season. But one word does come to mind: perseverance. I thought this year was about having hope and really having confidence in yourself and realizing that no matter now difficult the obstacle, you shouldn't keep your head down and just follow the light. And before you know it, you can make it out. That may be a cliché. But, it's really true. And I think for me, one of the most important things was to really fight my way back from my injury and not let anyone or anything take my season away. And when I look back at this, it will be all about perseverance and really just sticking it out.
Make no mistake about, Golden State is a good team. I don't know what kind of changes are going to be made in the offseason. But the pieces of this team are excellent. Wherever these guys go, I'm sure they will continue to be great players. If the Warriors keep them, the Warriors are going to be really good. If not, they will be individually great.
Should I be one of those who do not return in a Golden State Warriors uniform next year, I want you fans to know that this has been an amazing, amazing journey. And amazing seven years of my life. I've never met fans who are more dedicated and more amazing in so many ways. To be out there when things are not going well, to stay the course and to keep coming and supporting us despite how hard the economy is. I am forever in your debt. And I love you all.
Now, it's time for a brief vacation. But I'll be back before you know it.
